AAKe

Who we are

(AAKe) advances and unites Kenyan anthropologists.

The Anthropological Association of Kenya (AAKe) is a professional association of anthropologists and professionals engaging in anthropological work as reflected in the specialized domains of anthropology. The Association’s idea was conceived when the alumni and staff of the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, University of Nairobi saw the need for a national body of anthropologists. Although there were institutional associations in different universities, alumni groups, and social media groups, a nationally representative formal body could better advance anthropology as a science and as a profession in Kenya: an association was in the making. In early 2020, a group of anthropologists initiated the process of formal registration of the Association under the Societies Act with the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, University of Nairobi as its headquarters. The Association pursues the following objectives:

  • Promote Anthropology
  • Enhance Public Welfare
  • Advance Scientific Inquiry
  • Maintain High Standards
  • Disseminate Knowledge
  1. To promote the scientific study and professional practice of anthropology by encouraging the development of all branches of anthropology;
  2. To enhance the contribution of anthropology to the promotion of the public welfare/good, and peace and prosperity;
  3. To advance scientific interest and inquiry in anthropology and all related areas of knowledge and practice;
  4. To promote high standards of professional ethics, competence, conduct, education, qualifications, and achievement amongst anthropologists
  5. To facilitate the dissemination of anthropological knowledge through conferences, meetings, lectures, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions, and publications;
  6. To identify any arrangements with any Government, authority, or organisations, local or otherwise, that may be conducive to the Association’s objects or any of them; and to obtain from any such Government authority or organisations any rights, privileges, and concessions which the Association may deem desirable to obtain; and to carry out, exercise and comply with any such arrangements, rights, privileges, and concessions;
  7. To merge, in furtherance of the objects of the Association, with any companies, institutions, societies or associations having objects altogether or in part similar to those of the Association.

The Association draws membership from a wide array of professionals practicing anthropology and related inquiry and students of anthropology. Our members work in the public, private and non-governmental sectors in administration, research, communication, law and advocacy, education.

We are proud to be the pioneer bringing Kenyan anthropologists and professionals in anthropological work in a formal body. We value diversity and inclusivity as we seek to make the association robust and responsive to the advancement of human welfare regionally and beyond.
